Bearer of Bad News

Uzume appeared in Bobby's office, knowing full well that he'd be there, and looked at him sadly.  He noticed her right away, but didn't much care that she was there.  He'd acknowledge her on his own time.  She, however, didn't want to play his games.  Uzume waved her hand and the room filled with a bright flash, forcing him to cover his eyes.  It also forced him to stop working and acknowledge her.

When the light subsided, he looked up at her and angrily asked, "What do you want?"

She tilted her head and answered, "Robert, I have tragic news to relay to you.  Your daughters Grace and Isabella, along with their mother, were killed this evening.  I am truly sorry."

He looked at her for a long moment and then shrugged, going back to his work.  "Okay," he said.

Uzume didn't leave.  "Okay'?  That is all you have to say?" she said, but then shook her head, adding, "I should not be surprised.  You are a cold man, Mr. Goren.  I hope your remaining children do not come to know you as I do."  And with this, she left, leaning him alone with his reading.

Conditions Apply

Written on mulberry paper with a calligraphy brush in standard Western left-to-right English:

Robert,
You have displeased me and dishonored me.  I am held responsible for your actions, though I know you do not care for such matters.  I have been watching you and while you do your job well, you are out of control in your personal life.  Because of this, I am placing some conditions upon your survival.  If you do not heed these conditions or if you dishonor me in such a way as you have, you will die.  The conditions are thus:

1.  You are still allowed to carry on with your behaviors, no matter how atrocious they are.  However, your ability to perform in such ways is directly related to the amount of affection your wife has for you at the time.  If she has no affection for you, you are not able to do much more than bruise.

2.  Your wife's affection will also impact your physical health.  Currently, she has very little affection for you and as such, you will begin to feel very sick.  The symptoms will abate once her affection has been restored.

3.  I brought you back for the sake of your family.  Currently, your behaviors have been dishonoring them as much as they have me and you have been hurting them greatly.  The next time you break one of your children's hearts, you will perish.  If you ever decide to harm them, you will perish.

The letter is sealed with a beautiful square stamp in red ink and left on his desk.

From here on out, Uzume's interactions with Mab and Bobby will be part of [verse] redux and anything else with be [verse] canon.  I'm resetting the character, so her main verse will be the canon one.  All relationships, minus Mab and Bobby, will be reset and reestablished in the new canon verse.

In a brilliant flash of sunlight, Uzume appeared in the Chicago Medical Examiner's morgue. Upon her arrival, everyone in the morgue was frozen in time. She had business to attend to and unwanted questions would only get in the way. She stood to the side of the locker Robert Goren's body had been placed in. The door opened, the slab slid out smoothly, soundlessly. She removed the body bag, sending it back to storage as if it had never been used. Goren lay in front of her, pale, naked, dead.

Tracing her finger along the Y incision, she healed it. She returned his organs to their places, healing the damage done by the ME's autopsy. Next, she moved her hand over to the stab wounds. She held her hand above the holes, healing the damage done do his heart and lungs. Four scars are all that remain. They will serve as a reminder of what could be.

Uzume laid one hand on Goren's forehead and the other on his chest beside the handprint scar. "Robert Goren," she started, "I am returning you to life for the sake of your children. You will not be as you were when you were alive. You will now have a debt to pay." Her hands reversed the breakdown of his cells caused by decomposition. His lungs once again drew breath; his heart beat anew.

"In your first life, you were an ally of Death. I do not condone how you lived and you shall no longer live as such. You will exsist now to reap souls and escort them to the beginning of their next path. You are now an incarnation of Death itself. Like Izanami-no-mikoto, you will reap 1000 souls a day.  Killing is a compulsion for you, and as such, I will grant you the ability to take one life every three years.  I will find out if you disobey this."

"Your life will be almost as it once was.  You will retain your physical warmth," she continued, raising his body temperature back to 98.6 degrees.  "Your personality will not change.  You will still be abrasive, arrogant, and confrontational.  You will still lack the ability to empathize."

"There will be changes, however, as your debt includes abilities you would not be happy with, nigh miserable.  You will have near immortality, and the ability to be invisible. You will be able to sense when a life is about to end.  You will be able to disappear and reappear like old, but without the need for the connection to Queen Mab.  You will have the ability to manipulate time to achieve what you are required to do.  You will be able to choose to be seen by those whose souls you are reaping as well as those in the immediate area of the reaping.  And as Death is outside of magic and divinities, you have the ability to choose to ignore both."

"There will also be a restriction placed upon you.  For the rest of Constanza Murphy's life, you will not be able to harm her in any way.  Now, before I return you to your life, I must tell you one more thing.  I have erased Andrea Viviano's memory of your death.  I have not removed the punishment placed upon you by Athen as I feel it is just.  However, as per Andrea's discretion, you will be allowed to visit your daughters.  I have not touched the memories of anyone else."

Uzume took her hands from Goren's body and stepped back.  She clothed him in the clothes he had been wearing at the moment of death, free of any evidence of the violence that occurred, save for four cuts in the fabric of his shirt.  She restored him to consciousness and sent him to New York City.

Tomorrow (Sunday), I'm heading down to New York.  I'm working on getting into the police academy so I have three days of medical/psychological/fitness tests this week.  I'm staying with my cousin and she has internet, but I don't know if I'll have the time/energy to do much here.  If that's the case, I'll be back (probably) on Thursday!
